The festival sees Thais place a small container - known as a krathong - in the water, adorned with flowers, a candle, joss sticks, coins and food, where it is then left to float away.

It is believed the picturesque spectacle began as a way for people to seek forgiveness for their sins and give thanks to the river goddess, but it is now more commonly seen as an opportunity for people to have fun.

Local and national community groups, companies and organisations often design and build decorated rafts to mark the occasion, while a host of other entertainment - including beauty contests and firework displays - is also held.

This year, Loy Krathong is set to take place on Thursday November 10th throughout Thailand, as well as in certain parts of Burma and Laos.
