AsiaRooms.com - See King's Cup Elephant Polo in Thailand
The King's Cup Elephant Polo tournament is to be held between September 5th and 11th 2011 in Hua Hin.
HUA HIN, THAILAND, August 03, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Thailand holidaymakers will be able to enjoy an unusual sporting spectacle when the King's Cup Elephant Polo tournament takes place in September this year.
Hosted and organised by luxury resort owner Anantara, the event will be held between September 5th and 11th and will see 16 international and local teams contesting the trophy.
The rules for the quirky sport were originally laid down in 1982 and see teams of three players competing in 14-minute matches, which are divided into two halves, or "chukkas".
Hua Hin first launched the tournament in 2001 before it relocated to the Golden Triangle in 2006, but it is returning to its original home this year.
Animal lovers can be assured that the competing pachyderms are treated with the utmost care and respect, as elephants are important cultural symbols in Thailand.
All proceeds from the event will be given to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, an organisation dedicated to protecting the wellbeing of these creatures.
A variety of Thailand hotels are available at AsiaRooms.com for those wishing to see the elephant polo competition, including the Anantara Hua Hin Resort and Spa, where the tournament is being held.
