Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischutz will be staged in Barcelona next month.

BARCELONA, SPAIN, April 22, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu is hosting a run of performances of Der Freischutz this spring.

The opera will be staged from May 12th to 30th 2011 with the venue's orchestra and choir accompanying the story.

Written by Carl Maria von Weber with a libretto by Friedrich Kind, the three-act production is based on a German folk legend.

It sees a young marksman involved in a shooting contest that will decide his future career and prospects with the love of his life.

In a statement on the venue's website, the organisers remarked: "Supernatural elements and the fight between good and evil are expressed in the beautiful timbres of Weber's inspired music."

The piece was first performed at the Liceu in 1849. Der Freischutz does not translate accurately into English, but is typically interpreted as The Marksman or The Freeshooter.

Tickets for the production next month start from EUR7 (GBP6.25), with the action getting started at 20:00 local time every night, apart from the shows on May 15th and 29th, which begin at 17:00.
